What we look for when we explore strategic partnerships

Are you curious about what we offer in our partnerships? How we connect with potential partners at events, like BIO International Convention or in one-on-one meetings about future collaborations?

Two of our business development leaders (Scott DeWire and Stefan Walke), share a few thoughts from their time at conventions and beyond. These takeaways may help as you explore partnerships with us.

What do we look for in potential partnerships while we're at events, like the BIO International Convention?

Our entire global business development team attends BIO - each meeting with prospective partners across the disease areas where we're looking to partner. With a coffee in hand, we host one-on-one meetings, group presentations and more.

During these networking meetings, we see if we:

We look at what science is out there and if we're the right biopharma to help advance specific innovative treatment approaches.

What's unique about BIO?
This event is the largest partnering convention. It gives us a chance to meet with a wide range of innovators. At the latest convention, we met with more than 300 potential partners.

"We’re really looking at what our potential partners are working on. Does the concept stand out? Does it fit into what we’re exploring? Can we add value in getting these concepts to patients?"

Scott DeWire
Global Head of Business Development & Licensing

How does a first meeting turn into a long-lasting partnership?

We’re a company that’s open for partnering. These initial conversations can spark a collaboration that lasts. While we partner early, we also look to maintain partnerships so that we can continue to advance science and adapt as medicine does. Take for example our partnership with Trutino, which originally started through our Grass Roots program in 2019.

Science is complex — and working on it together can be even more complex. But when there’s trust and a shared drive to make it work, partnerships can lead to something truly meaningful. That’s when we have a real shot at making a difference for patients.
