From basic research at the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology to applied research and biopharmaceutical production through to business responsibility for the human pharmaceuticals and animal health business. Clinical research in the entire region is coordinated from Vienna.

The Angelika Amon cancer research building was opened in 2024 and provides space for more than 150 researchers.

Pioneering Oncology: Global Cancer Research Legacy

For over 20 years, Vienna has been a central pillar in Boehringer Ingelheim’s global oncology research network. One focus is on investigating cancer cell-directed therapies, that target key cancer drivers and hallmarks to directly kill cancer cells. Additionally, immune cell-directed therapies are exploring new ways of directing and boosting the immune system against cancer cells.

In September 2024, the new Angelika Amon cancer research building in Vienna was officially inaugurated. It is named after the internationally renowned Viennese cancer researcher Angelika Amon (1967-2020). It is a state-of-the-art, energy-efficient, and highly sustainable building that provides space for more than 150 researchers. Additional capacities that will help us strengthen our pipeline and develop medicines patients and their loved ones will benefit from.

The RCV established a unique scientific ecosystem that brings oncology research in Vienna together with biotech companies and research institutes in Switzerland and in Austria. Furthermore, a large network of external collaborations and partnerships around the globe has been established. This ecosystem allows the growth of the whole therapeutics portfolio and accelerates the development of novel cancer medicines.

To further boost biopharmaceutical production, the Large-Scale Cell Culture (LSCC) facility opened in October 2021.

Crafting Life-Saving Biopharmaceuticals in Vienna

In Vienna, biopharmaceuticals from our research and for other companies are manufactured. The facilities produce compounds in living cell cultures and in microorganisms, delivering these urgently required products from Vienna to customers worldwide. The focus is on recombinant therapeutic proteins and plasmid DNA from microorganisms, as well as biopharmaceuticals from cell-culture. In addition to this in-house biopharmaceutical production, contract manufacturing has also been conducted in Vienna since 1995.

To further boost biopharmaceutical production, the company opened the Large-Scale Cell Culture (LSCC) facility in Vienna in October 2021. This facility, equipped with smart technologies and artificial intelligence applications, is an essential addition to Boehringer Ingelheim’s global biopharmaceutical manufacturing network as it adds a total capacity of 185,000 liters with flexible production volume.
