Fornovo San Giovanni | Boehringer Ingelheim

Fornovo San Giovanni (Bidachem)

Founded in 1981, Fornovo San Giovanni is a key site for producing essential active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for both our Human Pharma and Animal Health business. Located just 40 kilometers from Milan, it's managed by Bidachem SpA, the local Boehringer Ingelheim affiliate. Today, more than 300 employees work at Bidachem in Fornovo San Giovanni.

Global Chemical Production

At the heart of the Fornovo site are two major multipurpose production plants, Synthesis 1 and 2, along with a state-of-the-art quality control laboratory. Since 2010, we've invested more than EUR 170 million in this site to ensure we produce top-quality active pharmaceutical ingredients across different disease areas for our patients. APIs from Fornovo are shipped to all parts of Boehringer Ingelheim’s global pharmaceutical production network, ensuring reliable supply for people across the world.

Sustainability in Focus

Responsibility for the environment has played a key role from the onset of our Italian site. In 2023, we added the site in Fornovo to our list of carbon-neutral certified sites, making it the first chemical plant at our company which achieved carbon neutrality. The site has been exclusively using renewable electricity since 2010, making it the first Boehringer Ingelheim location worldwide to do so.
