Boehringer’s work with Cue Biopharma

Cue Biopharma is mobilizing the immune system to treat serious diseases with precision immunotherapies. The company shares details about Boehringer's role in their work. Read what the team has to say.

What are the challenges with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases?

Autoimmune and inflammatory diseases are complex because of their multifactorial nature and the immune system’s intricate self-regulation. Historically, therapies have focused on broadly suppressing immune activity after disease onset, often resulting in incomplete or short-lived responses and trade-offs in safety and quality of life. There’s a need for approaches that leverage immune biology to restore balance, rather than override it.

With these common challenges in mind, what is Cue’s unique approach to medicine?

Our focus is grounded in harnessing the immune system’s natural sophistication to engineer and design precision immunotherapies aimed at re-establishing immune function, tolerance, and balance. For example, CUE-501, established in partnership with Boehringer Ingelheim, was developed with this approach in mind.

Leveraging Cue’s Immuno-STAT® T-cell engager platform, CUE-501 is a bispecific designed to bind a B cell-specific membrane protein while selectively engaging virus-specific memory T cells, enabling targeted depletion of pathogenic B cells in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.

From the outset, Boehringer Ingelheim recognized the significance and therapeutic potential of this strategy. Their team understood the translational rigor required to advance such science, the complexity of selectively redirecting T cells, and why this level of precision could represent a meaningful shift in the treatment of B cell-mediated autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.

How are Cue and Boehringer advancing science together?

[Partnering with Boehringer Ingelheim](/content/science-innovation/human-health-innovation/new-collaboration-develop-treatment-autoimmune-diseases "New collaboration to develop treatment for autoimmune diseases "/index.html) means working with an organization that has deep [immunology expertise](/content/science-innovation/human-health-innovation/science-focus/immunology-respiratory-research "Immunology Respiratory Research"/index.html) and strong development capabilities to help translate complex biology into therapies that can deliver durable benefit while potentially preserving patients’ quality of life. Taken together, these factors reinforced our confidence and strong foundation to advance CUE-501 as a next-generation therapeutic with the potential to meaningfully change the treatment landscape for autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.
