Stroke
Each year, over 12 million people worldwide experience a stroke, and around half will die as a result. Almost two-thirds of stroke survivors leave hospital with short- or long-term disabilities that markedly affect their quality of life, such as impaired brain function, psychological issues or physical impairments.
Cardiovascular, renal and metabolic (CRM) conditions such as diabetes, obesity or chronic kidney disease are associated with an increased risk of stroke. Stroke is a leading cause of death in people living with end-stage kidney disease.
Following a stroke, it is important to be treated as quickly as possible to reduce the long-term impact. For every minute after a stroke, approximately 1.9 million brain cells can be lost permanently.
