What are our pivotal areas of development?

Our key therapeutic areas include oncology, respiratory diseases, mental health, cardio-renal- metabolic diseases. In 2024, we received eight external designations for products in our pipeline in these areas. This includes three FDA Fast Track Designations, two FDA Breakthrough Designations and three Pioneer Drug Designations in Japan. We see these recognitions as an endorsement of our work, and as an incentive to continue to face the most demanding challenges in the future.

What are our primary markets?

Boehringer Ingelheim operates in several key markets both geographically and therapeutically. Geographically, North America is one of our largest markets, particularly the United States, which makes a significant contribution to our revenue. Europe is also a vital region, with significant operations in Germany, where the company is headquartered. In Asia, countries like China and Japan are important due to their large populations and growing healthcare needs. Latin America also plays a crucial role, with notable markets in Brazil and Mexico. We also have a presence in the Middle East, Africa, and Australia.

Therapeutically, Boehringer Ingelheim focuses on several areas within human pharmaceuticals. We have a strong presence in cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic diseases, offering treatments for conditions like diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and heart failure, with products such as JARDIANCE®. In addition to human pharmaceuticals, Boehringer Ingelheim is a global leader in the animal health industry. We work on innovative solutions for the prediction, prevention, and treatment of diseases in animals, reflecting our commitment to improving health for both humans and animals through innovative therapies and solutions.

What was our R&D investment in 2024?

We are continuing to expand and renew our existing product portfolio in order to safeguard the Group’s organic long-term growth. Accordingly, we have consistently increased our research and development (R&D) expenses in recent years. And with a total of approximately EUR 6.2 billion invested in the research and development of new medicinal products, we have again increased this value compared to the previous year. This corresponds to 23.2% of consolidated net sales. Of this, a large part of the R&D expenditure – EUR 5.7 billion – was invested in the Human Pharma business.
